Think of your content as an Article that you are writing about your subject matter that will be printed in a Newspaper. This will help keep you on track. Also, write to your audience as if you are talking to them personally. I try to write as if I was speaking to a small class of students, goes back to my teaching days. Use any device that helps your writing "flow" naturally.
Keywords
Once you have written your "Article" it is time to re-examine your keyword list. Pick out the most important keywords for the page you are writing and see how you can naturally work those keywords into the text. You don't want to cram them in and you don't want the text to seem forced, just easy natural speech. If you can get your keywords up to about 5% of your text you are doing great. Less than 3% and the Search Engines may not notice them, more than 7% and the Search Engines may thing you are Spamming the results. But don't worry, 5% is a lot of keywords, it will probably feel stuffed to you. The Search Engines will be analyzing the text in your content to find the words that seem to be the subject matter and that seem to be used frequently. Using your keywords in the page heading is practically required, and in the title of the page as well.

Links
The next stage in SEO - Search Engine Optimization is to work on your links. There are 2 basic kinds of links, Internal Links, and External Links.
The Internal Links help the Search Engines navigate your site and also help them to determine the relevancy of your content. Internal Links can be in Page Navigation, Image Names and Alt Tags, and InContext Links, where the link is within the text on your page. All of these are important to your SEO efforts.
External Links are both links going out from your web site to other sites and more importantly links coming into your site. One of the main ways the different Search Engines rank your site is by how popular it is. This popularity is to a great degree determined by how many sites link to yours. And to a slightly lesser degree by the quality of the sites linking to yours. So getting links from high quality sites is a must. Many SEO experts consider this the most important Search Engine Optimization technique you can use. I consider it very important, but only if all of the other main techniques are being used as well.
Accessibility
There are two kinds of Accessibility on the Internet. The first is making sure your site is accessible to people with disabilities, this is vitally important for major companies and required of government sites. Such techniques as having descriptive Alt tags on your images and not depending on multi-media are both useful.
The second kind of Accessibility is more important to our discussion and that is making your site accessible to the Search Engines. Basically Search Engines need to be able to easily navigate your site and they need to know which areas should be indexed and which can be ignored. This is accomplished with having a good text based navigation on your pages, using a properly formatted robots.txt file and setting up an XML Sitemap file.
Good Code
Finally, your site can be penalized for Bad Code. This doesn't just mean using a web design product like Dreamweaver to write your code for you. It means going into the code and hand editing it to clean up all problems. Using verification tools helps in this process, but you really should understand basic page coding (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) so that you can examine the page at the code level and make sure that the code is Clean.
